HOW TO APPLY FOR REGISTRATION AS A PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATE
Please reference our processing timelines for new applications and incoming mail.
Step 1: APPLICATION AND FEE
- Complete all sections of the application and sign and initial where required with original signature and initials (preferably in blue ink).
- Submit a check for $424 payable to the Board of Psychology (Board)
- Mail completed application and check to:

OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT(S)
- Official transcript(s) for the qualifying degree must be sent directly by the institution to the Board, either by mail or by emailing the Licensing Unit.

Transcripts must reflect the degree conferred or awarded date.

For doctoral degrees, if the official transcript does not list a specialization, request that the registrar or dean of the institution submit a letter directly to the Board verifying the field of specialization.

Applications Based on Admission to Doctoral Candidacy
If the application is based on admission to candidacy for a doctoral degree, in addition to official transcripts, request that the registrar or dean of the institution submit directly to the Board a letter certifying the following:
- 1) Admission to Doctoral Candidacy
The letter must state the date and confirm that you have been formally admitted to candidacy for a doctoral degree in one of the following areas:
- Psychology with the field of specialization in clinical, counseling, school, consulting, forensic, industrial, or organizational psychology.
- Education, with the field of specialization in educational psychology, counseling psychology, or school psychology.
- A field of specialization designed to prepare graduates for the professional practice of psychology.
- 2) Completion of Post-Graduate Education
- The letter must also certify that you have satisfactorily completed three or more years of post-graduate education toward the qualifying doctoral degree listed above.
- 1) Admission to Doctoral Candidacy
FOREIGN DEGREE(S)
Applicants using doctoral degrees earned outside the United States or Canada must show that the degree meets the Board's licensure requirements. The foreign doctoral degree must be equivalent to one from a regionally accredited U.S. or Canadian institution.
Master's level foreign degrees are not accepted for registration purposes.
You must have your foreign doctoral degree evaluated by either:
- A foreign credential evaluation service that is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES), or
- The National Register of Health Services Psychologists (NRHSP)
The evaluator must submit the evaluation report directly to the Board, including:
- A transcript in English, or translated into English by the credential evaluation service, of the degree used to qualify for licensure.
- An indication that the degree used to qualify for licensure is verified using primary sources.
- A determination that the degree is equivalent to a degree that qualifies for licensure pursuant to the Business and Professions Code (BPC) section 2914(b)
After the Board receives an application, fee, and official evaluation, the doctoral degree will be placed in a queue for review.
FINGERPRINTS
- Complete the Board's Request for Live Scan Services and take it to a Live Scan site to submit fingerprints to Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for criminal history background check.
- After submission of your fingerprints through Live Scan, submit a copy of the Request for Live Scan Services to the Board.
SUPERVISION AGREEMENT
- If you intend to accrue supervised professional experience towards licensure, complete and sign with an original signature (preferably in blue ink), a supervision agreement including a detailed supervision plan to be submitted with your application.
- Mail the supervision agreement to:

ADDING ADDITIONAL PRIMARY SUPERVISOR(S)
- If you will be supervised by more than one primary supervisor, complete all sections of the Notification to Add or Change Supervisor or Service Location for a Psychological Associate [PSB 101] for each additional primary supervisor, sign and initial with original signature and initials (preferably in blue ink), and mail with a $210 check to the Board. You must submit a separate notification with fee for each primary supervisor you wish to add. There is no fee to remove primary supervisors.
- If you intend to accrue hours for supervised professional experience towards licensure with the additional primary supervisor, complete and sign a supervision agreement including a detailed supervision plan to be submitted with the notification.
- Mail completed notification and supervision agreement to:

Step 2: ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AND REVIEW
- The Board will send an email acknowledging the date the application was received.
- A licensing analyst will review the application and supporting documentation and send an email outlining deficiencies, if any.
Step 3: REGISTRATION APPLICATION WITHDRAWAL, DENIAL OR APPROVAL
WITHDRAWAL
- An application that is not completed within ninety (90) days after additional information is requested will be withdrawn.
DENIAL
- The Board will contact you via email or certified mail if an application is denied because the registration requirements are not met.
APPROVAL
- The Board will contact you via email when your psychological associate registration is approved.
